Chapter Nine

“What?” Ben yelled, looking at Makena wide-eyed, as if she had lost her mind.

Maybe she had. The idea that Edward Foxall and he could be father and son was beyond far-fetched. Everyone always said how much Ben favored his dad, Steven Jenkins. But the resemblance between Ben and Edward was too startling to be a coincidence.

“Okay, maybe not your father.”

“Damn straight he’s not my father! Babe, what the hell?”

Makena held onto the front of his suit jacket to keep him from moving away from her. “Just hear me out. I can’t explain it, but I think…I mean…I have a feeling…”

Frustration drummed through her. She was ruining this conversation. So many thoughts ran through her mind at once. She couldn’t decide what to say and what to keep to herself. Most of what she was thinking was speculation. She didn’t have any hard facts to support her theory. Except…

“So what if the guy and I favor each other?” Ben eased out of her hold. “Everyone has a twin in this world. Besides, you know practically my whole family. If we were related, you would’ve met him long before now.”

“Ben, you didn’t see him. You two had the same eyes, and there’s no one in your family with your eyes. Even some of your facial expressions and mannerisms were the exact same as Edward’s.”

Makena needed Ben’s natural curiosity to kick in. She didn’t miss the way his eyes had lit up when he looked through the pictures of the land. He loved real estate almost as much as she loved shoes. She wanted him to dig for answers. For instance, who was Edward to him? Why’d he really leave the land? If Edward had known so much about Ben, then why hadn’t he reached out to Ben?

The whole situation had Makena on edge as her inquisitive nature ran wild. Outside of the night she had spent with Ben, she hadn’t been sleeping well. Guilt, though misplaced, continued to plague her for the past few weeks.

If only she’d been able to get the two men together before Edward passed. She believed with all her heart that there was something Edward hadn’t told her. Something important. Something that had everything to do with Ben.

Makena couldn’t shake the feeling that the two men were somehow related. But how? Ben was right. She knew most of the Jenkins clan and many of Katherine’s side of the family, and Ben definitely favored his father. Yet, out of hundreds of relatives, no one had his light-brown, almost hazel eyes, except for his youngest son.

Ben rubbed the back of his neck as he paced in front of her desk. She could almost hear the wheels in his head churning as his shoes tapped against her wood floors. He knew her well enough to know she wouldn’t just throw crazy ideas out like that.

The notion that there might be some family secret tied up with Edward wasn’t far from her thoughts. But she didn’t want to do anything to cause trouble.
